DESCRIPTION

Much branched annual herb, 30-60 cm tall; branches spreading. Leaves pinnate, 3-6 cm long; leaflets

9-15 pairs, suboppsoite or alternate, small, elliptic-oblong, covered with glandular hairs on both

surfaces. Flowers axillary, solitary, pink, blue or white.

PHARMACOGNOSY

Leaf : The leaves are compound, imparipinnate, l;eaflets small, 7 mm to 1 cm in length,

and 3 mm to 6 mm in breadth, greenish or light brown in colour, oblong to oval in shape with

rounded base and acute apex, margin serrate, pubescent on bothg the surfraces.

Transverse section through midrib shows cuticularized epidermis. Below upper epidermis

3-4 rows of palisade cells are present, while above lower epidermis 2 rows of collenchymatous

cells are present.

 

Fruit : Fruits are simple, dry, dehiscent pods, oblong in shape, about 1.7-2 cm in length

and 0.7 to 1 cm in breadth, yellowish brown or greenish brown with hairy surface,

apex acute, base tapering with persistent calyx and short stalk. Seeds are 1-3 in each pod,

brown or greenish in colour, nearly obovate, triangular in shape with pointed anterior end

and broader at the base. Surface of seed coat is rough and wrinkled, a micropile present on

the projected end as a minute slit or an opening

DISTRIBUTION

It ios commonly cultivated in the northern provinces, UP, Bihar, north and west Bengal and

also in other states to a limited extent.

CULTIVATION

ceveral varieties of gram differing in color and size are grown in India. Gram is grown generally

as a cold weather crop mixed with wheat, barley, linseed etc. and sometimes as pure crop too.

It thrives best on light loamy soils but can be grown on well drained heavy soils.
