DESCRIPTION

Small spiny tree upto 7 m tall, spines 2.5 - 4.5 cm long; bark greyish 6 mm thick. Leaves bifoliate,

leaflets 1.5 - 5.0 * 1-2.5 cm, elliptic-obovate, oblanceolate, puberculous, apex obtuse or acute.

Flowers 4-12, greenish-white, in axillary cymes or fascicles.

PHARMACOGNOSY

Bark : The outer surface of the bark is grey, rough and marked with lenticels. In older barks,

small circular patches of cork are seen. Transverse section shows periderm which consist of

phellem or cork, phellogen and phelloderm. Next lies secondary phloem consisting of crushed

elements, sieve tubes and phloem parenchyma traversed by tangentially elongated phloem rays.

DISTRIBUTION

This speices is probably native to Egypt and is globally distributed from Tropical Africa to

India and Myanmar. Within India, it is found throughout the drier parts from Punjab to

West Bengal, Rajasthan and Peninsular India.
