PHARMACOGNOSY

Seeds : Seeds are ellipsoid, flattened, grayish to reddish brown, 4-6 mm long and 4 mm wide;

taste somewhat astringent. Transverse section shows a single layer of columnar, thin-walled,

palisade like cells covered with a thin cuticle followed by a single layer of rectangular to square

bearer cells and 3 or 4 layers of thin-walled rectangular parenchymatous cells.

DISTRIBUTION

This species is native to India, globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it occurs all over up to an altitude of 1500 metres It is an important pulse crop particularly in Madras, Mysore,

Bombay and Hyderabad.

CULTIVATION

It grows on variety of soil, except highly a;lkaline soils. It is hardy and drought resistant. It thrives best on light sandy soil and is extensively grown on red loams, black cotton soils and stony and

gravelly upland soils.
