DESCRIPTION

A deciduous tree upto 20 m tall; bark dark grey, rough. Leaves alternate, obovate-oblong 10.5-30

* 6-15 cm, tapering at base, crenate-denticulate, rounded or shortly acuminate, glabrous

PHARMACOGNOSY

Bark : Rough, dark-oloured with vertical and diagonal splits, inner-bark red and fibrous.

 

Leaf : Leaves are simple, broadly obovate or obovate-oblong, glabrous, crenate-denticulate, thick,

smooth and shining on both sides, lateral nerves 10-12 pairs spreading, prominent,

petiole 1.2 cm long, narrow winged.

 

Flower : Calyx 4 lobed, epigynous, oblong, obtuse, upto 7*7 mm, calyx tube campanulate and

upto 15 mm long; greyish-wehite in colour and cartilagenous in texture; aestivation imbricate.

 

Fruit : Globose to pear shaped fleshy berry, 6-8 cm in diameter, green glabrous, crowned with

persistent calyx-lobes and style; seeds numerous embedded in fleshy pulp.

DISTRIBUTION

Throughout India in deciduous forests upto an altitude of 1500 m and also found in Andaman islands.

CULTIVATION

It is a hardy tree and can withstand fair amount of shade. It grows well on variety of soil and in wide

range of slimatic conditions.
