DESCRIPTION

A glabrous, much branched shrub or small tree. Leaves opposite, sub-sessile, elliptic or

broadly lanceolate, entire, acute or obtuse, often mucromelate. Flowers small, white or

rose coloured, fragrant, in large terminal pyramidal panicled cymes.

PHARMACOGNOSY

The leaves are simple with aromatic smell when crushed and are sweet, mucilaginous and slightly astringent in taste. Petiole is concavo-convex in trasnsection with a stele consisting

of an intraxylary phloem and continuous xylem cylinder within. The transverse section of leaf

presents an isobilateral structure with ranunculaceous type of stomata on both the surfaces.

Some of the epidermal cells are specialized into biggr elliptical mucilage sacs. The parenchyma

of leaf contains oil globules and monoclinic prisms of calcium oxalate crystals.

DISTRIBUTION

This species is globally distributed in the Paleotropics. Within India, it is cultivated throughout for

its leaves and as a hedge-plant, mainly in Punjab and Gujarat, and to a small extent in Madhya

Pradesh and Rajasthan. The more important centres of production are: Faridabad in Gurgaon

district (Punjab) and Bardoli and Madhi in Surat District (Gujarat).

CULTIVATION
